Vikja characters villain card Jokull


Jökull is a captain of a large fort close to a river. He is not too tall has red hair and a large braided beard. His eyes are greenish-brown and his voice is strong and hard. He often uses a long spear and shield in combat.

He has a small family consisting of his wife and two sons. He also keeps a pack of dogs to accompany him. All family members live at the fort, which is situated on a large hill looking out over the river.


Jökull's childhood had been a terrible one, his father and mother drowned at sea while he was rescued. Two men on a small fishing boat picked him up close to the shore. He was brought up by one of the fishermen that rescued him but he treated him like a slave. He was bound to do chores all day until he was exhausted. Many other people in town did not like Jökull either, and he was often bullied by the larger kids during his childhood. He found some companionship with a few stray dogs and often played with them in the hills. One day when he was almost reaching adulthood he left during the night and fled over the hills with his dogs to find a new home. He joined a small brigandry group and after many years worked his way up to become their leader. He then set up a plan to conquer a small fort and succeeded in his efforts.


Nowadays he leads his forces to attack and plunder the surrounding area. Devastation and ruin are a common sight in this region. He uses hit and run attacks and many people flee or look for protection abroad. Jökull tries to put all surrounding settlements into submission, as his goal is to create a small jarldom of his own. Lots of prisoners are taken from the population and they have been put to work in the silver mines. Many have perished in these mines as the conditions are horrific. He gains more wealth and power every year and he is well on his way to demand a place among the nobles.


Jökull is a smart and vengeful man seeking recognition and power. He still tries to find the man who owned the boat that drowned his parents but so far in vain. His fort is small but strong and he is regularly building extra stone defenses. His fleet is only 2 snekkja ships strong, but it's adequate for controlling the rivermouth. Now and then he sends out a snekkja to raid coastal villages in the night. His primary skills are maneuvering and hitting, his secondary skill is tactics. He carries a special shield which has several spikes at the boss. When he pushes his shield against an opponent it can sustain extra damage (D6 hitpoints). The tip of his spear is poisoned and when he wounds an opponent it will lower the attack and defense value by 1 point for the remainder of the battle.


Jökull has plenty of assets, a fort (pick a random card), a silver mine (pick a random mine card), 2 small snekkja's. 20 huskarls (warbands of 5 or 10 huskarls each), 20 karls (warband card 10), 30+ horses and 15 thralls. He owns 35 silver and has an income of 20. His riverfort is at an unknown location close to the coast.

Jökull has 1 patrol group of 10 huskarl warriors and 1 fort garrison of both huskarl (10) and karl (20) warriors. The elite huskarls are his close friends and henchmen, these are very strong combatants. They often lead one of the karl- or huskarl groups. All huskarls can use a maneuver card here. Attacking the fort solo is probably certain death. You need some forces to wear down the enemy and select one group of Jökull's men to fight at the time.

Scenarios & quests

Jökull the vengeful captain is a scenario full of combat. To take down his fort you need a good plan and command enough forces to be able to do it. Good timing and planning is essential to take down his forces one by one in a cooperative game. In a solo game the odds are even more challenging you need at least one cloak and dagger group as well as a few good scouts. The number of patrols and henchmen scale with number of players. Preferably the starting area for players is Norway, Denmark or England. The map area can be adjusted to suit the duration of play. Good starting areas for Jökull are Scotland, Ireland or Iceland. Special items are Jökull's shield with boss and his poisoned spear. The spear lowers the attack and defense value by 1 point for the remainder of the battle.
